I cannot believe we are already past the halfway point of September! I don’t know about where you are, but the weather is already starting to turn chilly here and I am NOT happy about it. I guess I missed the basic white girl gene that says I must love Fall because I do not. I like football season and the leaves changing, but I can’t deal with the colder weather. I think it stems from me being almost 6′ tall and not being able to find sleeves long enough to cover my arms. I’m hoping baby Asher makes his appearance soon because I straight up refuse to buy cold-weather maternity clothes to only wear a couple weeks.
Anyway, it’s time for another WWW Wednesday! This meme was originally hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and has been revived by Sam A. Stevens at Taking On a World of Words. To participate, just answer the following questions:
- What are you currently reading?
- What did you recently finish reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
Currently Reading:
Yes, I am still reading Ever the Brave. As with many of my buddy reads, I tend to read at a slower pace than I would normally. I could probably finish this book in a day or two. Although, so far, I’m not finding it as exciting as book one. It is also far more tropey and I think I smell a love triangle coming on, which doesn’t exactly motivate me to keep reading.
I was really hoping to have this one finished by release day (yesterday), but I’m not even close. This book is a BEAST! It is almost 900 pages and, while exciting and very well written, I just don’t find myself drawn to the story. Hopefully, I can get this one finished up soon, so I can share my review.
Monday, I started Geekerella on audio (it’s free on Audible now). It is very clearly a Cinderella retelling, but set in modern times with a geeky twist. So far, it is cute, but I’m not far into it yet. Will keep you posted!
Recently Finished:
Stealing Embers is the first in a new Angel/Nephilim Academy series. It is set to release September 22, 2020 and I’ve got a review coming I swear! For now, I will say that this book was so engrossing. I read it in one day. There is action and humor and romance and I highly recommend it.
As I mentioned last week, Into the Heartless Wood is a beautifully written, folklore-inspired dark fantasy by the author of Echo North. I loved this story and I have a review scheduled for closer to the publication date of February 12, 2021.
I did finish Ninth House. It wasn’t my favorite Bardugo book. There should be major trigger warnings first of all. Rape, sexual assault, drug use, self harm, violence/abuse, murder, blackmail. I’m sure there are more that I’m forgetting. The pacing was very jarring as well. There were near constant flashbacks, so you felt like you never knew what was happening or when it was occurring. The last 20% of the book really saved it for me. I like where it ended and I’ll probably read the next book in the series, but I don’t think I’ll be rushing out as soon as it hits stands.
Reading Next:
A wizard. An unwilling assistant. An explosive secret.
In an America controlled by wizards and 100 years behind on women’s rights, Beatrix Harper counts herself among the resistance–the Women’s League for the Prohibition of Magic. Then Peter Blackwell, the only wizard her town has ever produced, unexpectedly returns home and presses her into service as his assistant.
Beatrix fears he wants to undermine the League. His real purpose is far more dangerous for them both.
Subversive is the first novel in the Clandestine Magic trilogy. It is set to release September 27, 2020. The other 2 novels are coming this Fall, so there won’t be a long wait between, which I LOVE! I’m reading it for review, but I’ve already read an excerpt and was immediately engrossed, so I can’t wait to dive in! I’ve also got an interview scheduled with author Colleen Cowley that will be up on the blog on the 25th. Stay tuned for my review of Subversive coming soon!
Have you read any of the books above? Let me know you’re opinions in the comments. Feel free to share your WWW link or let me know what you’re currently reading as well!
I’m dying to read Into the Heartless Wood!
