“But life makes stone of us all before we’re turned to ashes. You have to harden to the elements you’re presented with, lest they crush you.” Jessaca Willis, Shadow Crusade

Shadow Crusade is an exhilarating start to an epic new fantasy romance series by Jessaca Willis. Incredible world-building, horrifying monsters, edge-of-your-seat action, believable characters, and intriguing mysteries are just part of what make this novel so great. You know me, I love a bit of romance in everything I read and this book does not disappoint. Although, I’m not sure what it says about me that any time an evil-looking half demon/half man shows up I immediately see it as a romantic interest.

Halira is such a refreshing heroine. While her tragic backstory may be typical for a fantasy MC, her flaws reveal a character who’s far more relatable. She doesn’t cower to her friends, family, or superior’s wishes. She’s independent, yet compassionate. She’s sassy, but not to the point of annoyance. She doesn’t join the crusade and immediately become a skilled warrior. That’s not to say there isn’t a bit of magic and mystery surrounding our FMC. Suffice it to say, she’s the kind of character that captures your attention and your heart. If only she were real, I think we’d be best friends.

Dimitri is not my favorite person, but only because I don’t jive with his personality. All of the characters in Shadow Crusade (side characters included) are thoroughly well written. I appreciate that Willis did not create one-dimensional characters that are distinctly good or bad, likeable or hated. Rather, they posses both flaws and redeeming qualities that feel authentic and well-rounded.

This book has plenty of action, but feels like it is just the tip of the iceberg of what Willis has planned for this epic series. Fans of paranormal romance and high fantasy alike will adore this first installment of the Primordials of Shadowthorn.
