Fire Heart is the first book in an enchanting, new Fantasy Romance series by Emma Hamm, The Dragon of Umbra. Told in dual perspectives, long-time fans and first-time readers alike are sure to adore this tale, which has all the magic, romance, and adventure we’ve come to expect from Hamm’s writing. In short, this book is a fairytale version of The Bachelor, except the bachelor is a king who despises magical creatures, and our female main character is a half-elf sent to assassinate him. She just has to get past his hot bodyguard, who just happens to be a dragon.
If that description alone doesn’t sell you, keep reading.
Our half-elf, Lore, is a breath of fresh air in the realm of Fantasy Romance. She’s not warm and fuzzy, nor is she pitiable or unnecessarily sassy. She’s not even very “likable” initially, which makes her far more relatable than typical heroines. Lore is abrasive, lawless, and uncouth. She takes care of herself and nothing else. Until she doesn’t. I won’t lie. I read these books 100% because of the romance, but I would read this book again for the growth of Lore’s character alone. Satisfying doesn’t begin to cover the way I feel about this arc.
That being said, the other characters in this story were like sprinkles on the sundae, just adding to what is already great. I adored Beauty and want to be her best friend forever. The king is so well written that I hate him with every fiber of my being. And, of course, there’s Abraxas. Fierce, protective, and often times frustrating, my heart breaks for him and the sacrifices he makes. I’m so grateful that we got dual perspectives in this book, so readers can see the world through his lens as well. It definitely helps complete the picture and speed along the romance development.
The world-building was simple, but effective. It unfolds organically throughout the story, rather than being dumped on us in early chapters. There’s also plenty of room to expand in future books since descriptions were limited by the knowledge and experiences of our two main characters. It might seem from my review that the romance is the feature of this story, but there is plenty of action for those who prefer it. The overarching story is one of rebellion and retribution. If you enjoy stories of political upheaval, revolution, and intrigue, this book is also for you.
From excitement to anger to heartbreak to hope, Fire Heart is a remarkable story that will set you on an emotional rollercoaster and leave you reeling for days after you’ve finished. I recommend this for fans of Kelly St Clare, Gena Showalter, Keira Cass, and Sarah J Maas. I can’t wait to see what book 2, Bright Heart, has in store for us.
Thank you to Emma Hamm for providing me with an ARC to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
