Gild by Raven Kennedy was an unexpected and immediate favorite. Kennedy’s immersive writing captured me right away. What an opening! I did not know what I was in for, but once I started I couldn’t stop turning pages. Auren is such a compelling main character. How Kennedy managed to make a golden woman who’s little more than a pretty pet in a gilded cage relatable, I will never know, but I was rooting for her from the start. Her desperation is palpable, becoming as much a character trait as it is an obstacle to overcome. I loved the moments when she takes charge of a situation and we see her true potential. I hope that the future books in the series bring some much-needed growth and independence to her character. As soon as I finished it, I had to buy book 2, Glint. I’m grateful that book 3, Gleam will be out soon as well. I adore retellings, so I’ve read a lot of them. This was my first King Midas retelling though. The fae elements and dark vibes, put Gild right at home in today’s adult fantasy romance market. Fans of ACOTAR, A Touch of Darkness, and From Blood and Ash are sure to love The Plated Prisoner Series.
